$19.26 USD

Iz's breezy Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World medley brought legions of new fans to this 1993 album when it appeared on several TV and film soundtracks years later. His second solo album also features Kuhio Bay; Ka Huila Wai ; his take on Take Me Home, Country Roads , and more! To gauge the magnitude of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's popularity in his native Hawaii, consider this: following his death in 1997 (at age 38, attributed to his profound obesity), Kamakawiwo'ole's body lay in state in the state capitol, only the second person to receive such an honor. Kamakawiwo'ole's appeal lies in his love for prestatehood, precondominium Hawaii and the expressiveness of his gently passionate voice, which can float through higher registers with an ease that brings Johnny Mathis to mind. Several selections ("Ka Pua U'i," "White Sandy Beach of Hawai'i," the sun-kissed "La 'Elima") feature Kamakawiwo'ole in a traditional mood, using only his ukulele to adorn the charm of his native lyricism. Others, such as the Jimmy Buffett-like "Maui Hawaiian Sup'pa Man" add playful contemporary touches that suit Kamakawiwo'ole's style. Most touching are the string-backed laments that open and close the album, "Hawai'i '78 Introduction" and "Hawai'i '78," initially a reflection on his father's death, later on the passing of Hawaii's native culture. Best known is his medley "Somewhere over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World," which played over the closing credits of the film Meet Joe Black. --Terry Wood See all Editorial Reviews

$13.56 USD

For the first time since their very early days, the Pixies spent a total of six weeks in pre-production, writing, arranging and rehearsing a plethora of songs. Between the band's late-80s/early 90s touring schedule and delivering an album once a year, there simply wasn't time for more than a day or so of fleshing out their music before recording started. 'This was a wonderful luxury, for us to have the time to be able to really work these new songs out,' said Pixies drummer David Lovering. 'By the time we started recording, we all knew the songs backwards and forwards, so it took half as long for us to make this album as it did to make 'Indie Cindy.' And it was great working with Tom...he started with us in pre-production and played a big part in keeping us focused on making the best music we could.' In addition, the band - Lovering, rhythm guitarist/vocalist Black Francis and guitarist Joey Santiago - officially welcome bassist Paz Lenchantin to the Pixies' permanent line-up. Lenchantin has been the band's touring bassist since January 2014, and played an integral part in the recording of Head Carrier. Her cool and dreamy soprano can be heard singing lead on the track 'All I Think About Now.' All songs were written by the Pixies apart from 'All I Think About Now,' which was written by Francis and Lenchantin.

$8.56 USD

What better way to test the security surrounding a U.S. vice president-elect than to hire someone skilled in the killing arts to penetrate his protection? Assassination strategy, though, is only part of the assignment facing Jack Reacher in Without Fail. This restive, blunt-edged ex-military cop must also determine whether recent threats against VP-to-be Senator Brook Armstrong are legitimate or are primarily intended to embarrass the perfectionist head of Armstrong's new Secret Service detail, M.E. Froelich, who happens to have been a girlfriend of Reacher's late brother. If Without Fail lacks the emotional urgency of Lee Child's previous novel, Echo Burning, it still barely lets the reader catch a decent breath between plot crests. Jack and his fetching yet formidable colleague, Frances Neagley, must figure out how warning letters to Armstrong are being delivered into the Secret Service sanctum, whether the senator is at risk because of something political or personal, and who staged the demonstration murders of two innocent men also named Armstrong, first initial B. Unfortunately, a few twists (including the source of a thumbprint applied to the threats against Armstrong) can be figured out in advance, and the story is light on character development. A tiny breach in Reacher's reclusive carapace opens as Froelich transfers the love she once felt for his brother toward him, and there are suggestions that Neagley may have depths of feeling just waiting to be plumbed. However, other players are mere ciphers--the sacrificial victims of an action-oriented yarn. --J. Kingston Pierce --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. From Publishers Weekly The sixth time's a charm for thriller meister Child, whose latest escapade starring ex-military cop Jack Reacher is handily his most accomplished and most compelling to date. The suspense-laden plot kicks off with U.S. Secret Service agent M.E. Froelich telling Reacher: "I want to hire you to assassinate the Vice President of the United States." V-p-elect Brook Armstrong has received a series of anonymous death threats, and Froelich needs to uncover their source and ascertain the effectiveness of Armstrong's security detail. Reacher agrees to masquerade as an assassin because he can't resist a challenge and because Froelich had loved his older brother, Joe, a Secret Service colleague killed in a botched operation. As Reacher pieces together an increasingly frustrating puzzle, Child ratchets up the excitement with several breathtaking set pieces, including a Thanksgiving dinner for D.C.'s homeless that turns deadly, a jaw-dropping coup de th‚ƒtre and a slam-bang finale in Wyoming's mountains. He even extracts tension from mundane events, as when Reacher searches for clues on a security video of an office cleaning crew. The novel's detailed insider's view of political skullduggery is certain to intrigue readers, and the various characters' relationships, handled with careful restraint, provide an added layer the growing attachment between Froelich and Reacher; both characters' recollections of Joe; Reacher's regard for Frances Neagley, a former colleague whom he calls in for help. And then there's Reacher himself, the stolid, flawed man's man who gives no quarter on any level. Indeed, the novel's final line serves as a pr‚cis of this quietly fascinating character: "He headed west for the Port Authority and a bus out of town." This Child's play will be a tough act to follow. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. Read more

Kinky Friedman has reinvented himself yet again, this time with his first all new studio album in nearly forty years. Kinky, with the extraordinary help of producer Brian Molnar, guitarist Joe Cirotti, and former Texas Jewboy pianist Little Jewford, presents an all new Kinky, with his album, The Loneliest Man I Ever Met. Filled with never-heard-before Kinky originals and beautifully rendered covers of such artists as Tom Waits, Warren Zevon, and Willie Nelson, this new cd is all about Kinky s ultimate ability to deliver much more than just a funny line or humorous tune. The spare, yet lush arrangements all point up Kinky s unique talent as both a songwriter and interpreter of great material. Guest performers Nelson, his sister Bobbie, bassist Kevin Smith, and uber mouth harpist Mickey Raphael support with appearances but never override the simplicity and grace of the tunes and the artist himself. In a career filled with wondrously successful adventures, Kinky Friedman has never put forth something so personal as The Loneliest Man I Ever Met.

Flux

With Flux, Rich Robinson presents his most accomplished solo album to date--13 new, original songs that draw deeply on his diverse roots. A blues-rock odyssey straight from Robinson's soul, the guitarist returned to Applehead Studios in Saugerties, NY, the recording facility that has become his creative hub. Nestled away within Woodstock's famed artist enclave, Robinson's work at the studio has yielded Woodstock Sessions, The Ceaseless Sight and now Flux. The entire writing and recording process, explains Robinson, is the driving force for his creativity. I love being in the recording studio, states Robinson simply. It fuels the desire to create within me. I enjoy watching it unfold. Each development fires another idea and in the end you have this organically created song that seeming came out of nowhere. It brings me such joy and peace. It never ceases to amaze me. Flux showcases a rich variety of tempos, tones and guitar tunings, ranging from the vibrant swagger Robinson first popularized with the Black Crowes to the rich, evocative allure evident in songs such as Sleepwalker and Ides Of Nowhere. Those were great examples of songs transforming from little ideas I originally had. Both just came alive when I had the band with me in the studio. They weren't anything like what I had first envisioned. It was exciting to experience that process. Robinson's creative process within the recording studio shaped such standout Flux tracks as Music That Will Lift Me, the album's first single. I am always excited by the creation itself, Robinson explains. I used the studio to specifically write that song. I had these parts written but it started to unfold once I got to Applehead Studios. I later wrote the lyrics in Nashville and it had really evolved into something special. Brimming with redemptive spirit, Robinson's vocal and guitar work shine throughout. Joining him on the track is Charlie Starr of Blackberry Smoke who lends guitar alongside Robinson's own. Backed by musicians Matt Slocum (keys), Marco Benevento (keys), Danny Mitchell (keys) Zak Gabbard (bass), Joe Magistro (drums / percussion), and vocalists John Hogg and Danielia Cotton, Robinson transports the listener with a powerful collection of music. From the groove-laden feel of opener The Upstairs Land, the kick of funk via Shipwreck, and the gospel swell of Everything's Alright, to the emotional build-up of Life and the hearty stomp of closing track Sleepwalker, Flux ebbs and flows through moods, delivering a varied listener experience.

Are You Experienced

The debut release from The Jimi Hendrix Experience is widely regarded as the greatest, most influential debut release from any artist. Are You Experienced has long been acknowledged as one of the most influential rock albums of all time. There are, however, two distinctly different editions of this legendary album. The original version, prepared and sequenced by Jimi and producer Chas Chandler, was issued throughout Europe In May 1967. This album excludes the group's first three UK singles. There has never been a mono release of this album in the US. The classic US edition of the album was only available in mono for a brief period after its original August 1967 release. This version features the classic fish-eye cover and includes such hits as "Purple Haze" and "Hey Joe." These original monophonic mixes have been transferred from the original master tapes by noted mastering engineer Bernie Grundman. Grundman's all analog mono mastering process helps to present the vitality of the original recordings as accurately as possible.

The author offers many telling details.” (Kirkus Reviews) “Conason shows his writing and research chops to full advantage in this engrossing look at former president Bill Clinton in his post-presidency years. From the book's first page—a detailed January 2001 snapshot of Clinton's first morning as a private citizen—the book grabs the reader's attention and holds on tight. . . . detailed and intimate . . . . Coming in the midst of a particularly fierce election season, this look at Clinton and his extraordinary work ethic may strike readers as almost poignant.” (Publishers Weekly) “This deeply researched narrative about the 16 years since Bill Clinton left office sheds light on his strengths and weaknesses.” (The New York Times Book Review)  “A compelling portrait” (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) About the Author Joe Conason is editor-in-chief of The National Memo and an editor at The Investigative Fund.
