Weezer (Blue Album) [LP]

Weezer, with its simple blue cover featuring a group band shot, was not like anything most kids in 1994 had heard before, taking its nerdy cues from strange places the 1950s, comic books, Dungeons & Dragons, the Bible and producer Ric Ocasek, pop auteur of The Cars. Initially released without a single or much notice, the album's sales started slow but eventually reached triple platinum status, spending 78 weeks on the chart and peaking at No. 16 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. It has sold 3.7 million copies in the U.S alone. Local radio play for 'Undone The Sweater Song' prompted an official release and video directed by then rising star Spike Jonze. The video featured the band performing on a soundstage, joined by a wandering pack of dogs. Their next Jonze-directed innovative video for 'Buddy Holly' helped spike the band s popularity and won four MTV video awards. The song rose to No. 2 on Billboard s US Modern Rock chart, one of three top 10 hits for Weezer. The album's esteem has only continued to rise in the decades since its release and its impact has been magnified. Rolling Stone placed the Blue album in both its lists of top 500 albums (No. 297) and top 100 debut albums, where it was No. 35: 'When it came out, Weezer's debut was merely a cool, quirky power-pop album with a couple of hit singles: 'Buddy Holly' and 'Undone (The Sweater Song).' But Rivers Cuomo's band became a major influence to the young sad-sack punkers who today claim Weezer as one of emo's pioneers. Mixing winking deadpan delivery with serious hooks, guarded sensitivity and a deep disinterest in alt-rock's then-roiling culture wars, they came up with a record that's aged much better than a lot of the serious indie-rock of the time.'

Captain Underpants and the Attack of the Talking Toilets: Color Edition (Captain Underpants #2) From Publishers Weekly In this worthy sequel to The Adventures of Captain Underpants, Pilkey maintains the original's
$5.59 USD

From Publishers Weekly In this worthy sequel to The Adventures of Captain Underpants, Pilkey maintains the original's satiric, self-referential formula as he revisits fourth-grade pranksters Harold and George, along with their school principal and principle nemesis, Mr. Krupp (aka superhero Captain Underpants). Trouble begins when Harold and George sabotage a science fair and are punished with "The Invention Convention Detention." Bored, the boys collaborate on a comic book about Talking Toilets. To their surprise, the Toilets come to life and Mr. Krupp's alter ego is called into service. Worst of all, even the brave Captain Underpants may be no match for the Toilets' leader, "nearly a ton of twisting steel and raging porcelain" known as the TT 2000. Pilkey illustrates in uncomplicated black-and-white line drawings with washes of gray, and offers "Flip-O-RamaTM," which requires turning a page back and forth for low-low-budget animation ("Don't forget to add your own sound-effects!"). He promises "extremely graphic violence" in scenes of "a giant toilet getting its shiny hiney kicked," ridicules teachers named "Ms. Ribble" and "Miss Anthrope" and decides that the story just wouldn't be complete without "upchucking." Bart Simpson could learn a few things from the subversively hilarious Harold and George, who consider inventing a robot urinal ("The Urinator"), then decide, "They'll never let us get away with that in a children's book. We're skating on thin ice as it is!" Ages 7-10. Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to the Paperback edition. From School Library Journal Grade 3-6This epic novel opens with an introductory cartoon strip that tells the top-secret truth about how two kids, George and Harold, used the 3-D Hypno-Ring to hypnotize their principal, who now becomes Captain Underpants whenever he hears fingers snaping. In this second adventure, the boys are banned from attending the annual Invention Convention and sent to detention to keep them out of trouble. This, of course, is impossible, so they sneak into the school that evening and tamper with all of the inventions to wreak havoc. They also make copies of their newest comic strip of vicious attack toilets and the daddy monster of them allTurbo Toilet 2000. The copy machine is an invention that duplicates into live matter all images it copies and the attack toilets come to life. The wild story actually comes to a logical conclusion, but it really doesnt matter. The fun is in the reading, which is full of puns, rhymes, and nonsense along with enough revenge and wish fulfillment for every downtrodden fun-seeking kid who never wanted to read a book. The cartoon drawings and the amazing flip-o-rama pages make this book so appealing that youngsters wont notice that their vocabulary is stretching. Hooray for Captain Underpants! Watch him fly off your shelves.Marlene Gawron, Orange County Library, Orlando, FL Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

" --USA TODAY "For every downtrodden fun-seeking kid who never wanted to read a book." --SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL "Subversively hilarious." --PUBLISHERS WEEKLY "Celebrates the triumph of the good-hearted." --The Educational Book and Media Association "It'll make kids laugh until soda comes out of their noses." --BULLETIN OF THE CENTER FOR CHILDREN'S BOOKS From the Author NOTES (from Pilkey.com): This book is based on a superhero that Dav Pilkey invented way back in 1973 when he was a second-grader. The comics that Dav made were very much like the comic book that George and Harold sell on the playground in Chapter 3. When I began making children's books in 1986, my goal was to one day make a book about Captain Underpants. I wrote several different versions of this story, including a 48-page comic book, but every publisher who saw it turned it down. When the book was finally accepted in 1996, it was a real dream come true! -- Dav Pilkey Many of the things in the book are taken directly from Dav's childhood: the practical jokes, the comics, even the cheesy animation technique called "Flip-O-Rama" (Dav and his friends used to amuse themselves by making these flip-action animated pictures in elementary school). Dav Pilkey had dyslexia when he was a kid. He was always discouraged by wordy texts, small type, and lengthy chapters. My goal with The Adventures of Captain Underpants was to make a chapter book that SEEMED like a picture book. So I wrote incredibly short chapters and tried to fill each page with more pictures than words. I wanted to create a book that kids who don't like to read would want to read. -- Dav Pilkey Fun Facts: 1. George and Harold's first names were inspired by one of Dav Pilkey's favorite movies, It's A Wonderful Life (directed by Frank Capra). This is a film about two brothers named George and Harold Bailey, and how George's life is changed dramatically when an angel gives him a chance to see what the world would have been like if he'd never been born. 2. George and Harold's last names (Beard and Hutchins) were the last names of Dav's two favorite "Little Rascals" (a.k.a. Hal Roach's Rascals, a.k.a. Our Gang) characters: "Stimey (Matthew Beard)" and "Wheezer (Bobby Hutchins)". 3. George and Harold's school, Jerome Horwitz Elementary School, got it's name from "Curly" of "The Three Stooges". Curly's given name was Jerome Horwitz. 4. If you look at the box on page 45, you'll note that George and Harold live in Piqua, Ohio. Dav Pilkey chose Piqua as the setting because it used to be known as the Underwear Capital of the World. Every year Piqua hosts an "Underwear Festival"! It seemed like the perfect place!
